Do I have to be WKU alumnus to travel on your trips?
Though Topper Travelers is designed for WKU Alumni, we welcome anyone interested in educational travel.
Do I have to be a member of the WKU Alumni Association?
Yes, sustaining members of the WKU Alumni Association help support programs such as Topper Travelers and we encourage your membership!
What tour companies do you work with?
We utilize travel companies that specialize in alumni and affinity travel. All tour operators are researched for safety, reliability, and experience. The Alumni Association has long term relationships with all the travel companies with which we work.
How many people generally travel on an WKU Alumni trip?
The number varies from 25-40, depending on the travel program. Our tours are exclusive, we do not partner with other groups or universities.
How early should I make a reservation?
We always suggest you make reservations as early as possible to ensure a reservation on the travel program of your choice. Some trips sell out very quickly and it is impossible to determine how quickly a trip will sell out.
Does the Alumni Association offer travel insurance?
The WKU Alumni Association does offer travel insurance. However, many of the travel companies we work with do. We highly recommend the purchase of this type of insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against last minute trip cancellation and other travel related risks.
You may want to purchase optional travel health insurance as well.
Some things to keep in mind:
* Medicare does not currently provide coverage for those traveling outside the United States. This restriction applies to passengers on board cruise ships that are registered in a foreign country (almost all cruise ships have a foreign registry).
* Your credit cards may cover you in some areas but make sure you find out exactly what they cover.
* It's a good idea to have your camera, jewelry, sports equipment or any valuable personal possessions specially scheduled on your homeowner's policy. Travel insurance limits what you can claim for certain personal belongings.
* Many health insurance plans do not guarantee payment directly to foreign hospitals, may have a deductible, or not cover the cost of emergency medical transportation. Deductibles or co-payments frequently apply outside most plan service areas.
Are there any physical requirements?
To enjoy your alumni travel experience, we recommend that participants be in good health and able to keep pace with the group. If you require assistance we recommend that someone who can provide the required assistance accompany you.
When will I receive my final travel documents?
Your final documents will be sent to you directly from the travel company anywhere from 30 to 15 days prior to your departure. They will be sent by priority mail and are not able to be delivered to a P.O. Box.
Can I cancel my trip and receive a refund?
Most tour suppliers charge a nominal cancellation fee from the time of deposit to cover expenses incurred in processing a new reservation and mailing out preliminary trip information. Be sure to read the cancellation policies that apply to your particular trip. Cancellation penalties apply as a percent of the tour cost and are calculated by the number of days prior to departure when you cancel. Because our travel providers have different policies governing cancellations, please review the cancellation fees prior to making your reservation. We also strongly encourage purchasing trip cancellation insurance to minimize financial risks.
Why do I have to pay more if I travel alone?
The prices of all trips are based on the cost of two people sharing a hotel room or ship cabin. If you travel alone, there is no one else to share the lodging expenses. Therefore, a single person must cover their entire costs, instead of half. Please note that the single supplement for a cruise is generally much higher than a "land" trip since a substantial portion of the total trip cost is that of the cabin. Most tour operators will try to honor requests for roommates, but there is no guarantee that one will be available.
Wouldn't it be cheaper to plan the trip on my own?
Traveling with WKU offers many benefits that individuals could not reasonably get on their own. We often arrange visits to residences or gardens that are not open to the public. Most WKU trips are " inclusive" and cover many of your meals, internal transportation and entrance fees. We provide the best in-country guides and lectures led by one of WKU’s top faculty. We look after the details so that you can relax and enjoy sharing experiences with like-minded people.
Is airfare included in the price of a trip?
Some programs include discounted group airfare. Unless specified, international and domestic airfare are not included in the price of a trip.
