Alumnus of the Week: Jenny (Sutherland) Tomaszewski ('14)
Major: Recreation Administration
Current town: Stuttgart, Germany
Job: Army Outdoor Recreation Program Manager at U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart, Germany, and the Europe Region Representative for the Army Outdoor Recreation Program
Why I chose WKU: “My parents both attended and met at WKU. I grew up visiting the Hill and it felt like home.”
Favorite WKU experience or memory: “I was part of the Outdoor Leadership Program (OLP).”
What WKU means to me: “WKU—including the staff, teachers, classmates and friends—provided me with a place I felt supported while being molded into the productive adult I am today. The traditions and experience made me feel part of the community I can’t wait to visit when I come back to the States.”
Skills learned at WKU: “I’m truly thankful I made my way into the Recreation Department and found something I’m passionate about. My education at WKU and the professors who instructed me groomed me, and I continue to strive to be the best and to provide the best service to my customers.”
Advice for future Hilltoppers: “Outdoor recreation and adventure education is an extremely rewarding career. We work when others want to play, but the difference you can make in someone’s life, especially in a military service member, is why serving those who serve is such an honor.”
Hobbies or Interests: “Pretty much everything I do for work is what I enjoy personally. You never work a day in your life if you enjoy what you do. Rock climbing, snowboarding, hiking, biking, SCUBA and anything adventurous. I do enjoy volunteering with the scout troops to provide Leave No Trace educational classes.”
Interesting fact about you: “My grandfather was stationed in Augsburg, Germany, in 1950, and I have been able to ski in the same place he did many years ago. Learning about history in a book will never be as interesting as walking the same path as those who came before us.”
Favorite quote or motto: “Changes in latitude, changes in attitude.” ~ Jimmy Buffett
Anything else we should know about you: “I am proudly married to an Army officer whom I met through a mutual friend while rock climbing. Luckily, with the career I started, I am able to carry on even when moving often due to working for the Army.”
