David Heard Memorial Scholarship Fund announces first recipients

Four WKU students were named the first recipients of the David Heard Memorial Scholarship on May 5, 2018, during the 2nd Annual David Heard Memorial Bass Fishing Tournament at Barren River Lake State Resort Park.

Born in Nashville, Tenn., David Heard was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and Alabama football. He was a student at Southern Kentucky Community and Technical College and a member at Living Hope Baptist Church in Bowling Green, Ky. Heard passed away on May 9, 2016, at the age of 19. The Heard family celebrates and honors his life through the annual fishing tournament to increase awareness about water safety and raise money to enhance the scholarship fund.

Andrew Alvey, a sophomore pursuing a degree in Architectural Science; Brandon Bayer, a junior pursuing a degree in Elementary Education; Caleb Mulzer, a junior pursuing a degree in Management with a minor in Construction Management; and Lucas Walz, a sophomore pursuing a degree in Recreation Administration, were chosen as the first recipients for the scholarship.

Established in 2016, the David Heard Memorial Scholarship Fund is an endowed fund through the College Heights Foundation at WKU to benefit students participating on the WKU Bass Fishing Team. During this weekend’s fishing tournament, $3,800 was raised for the scholarship fund.
